Programs/Initiatives

The Foundation Schools provides a comprehensive, individually tailored program to meet the educational and clinical needs of our students. In order to ensure that our students have the resources they need to achieve success, The Foundation Schools looks to the support of friends, foundations and businesses for the following program initiatives:

Annual Giving Fund – Annual Giving Fund – the donations collected from this drive are used to support all of our special programs, including the Another Path drug education and prevention program, Foundation Links and Food for Thought. The fund also helps to ensure that The Foundation Schools can purchase up-to-date technology and other necessary materials.

Foundation Links – This is an after-school counseling and crisis intervention program to help students and their families beyond the traditional school day. Foundation Links seeks to break the cycle of domestic crisis and poverty leading to school failure by providing outreach to directly address the external issues that are preventing the students from attending and experiencing success in school. This program is completely funded by the generosity of supporters, as Federal and State tuition funds may not be used for programs not occurring during the school day. Encompassed within Foundation Links is The Foundation Schools’ Basic Needs Fund, which helps to ensure that the students and their families are provided with the emergency food, clothing and medication they need.

Food for Thought – The majority of the students at our Largo, MD school live in households with incomes below the poverty level. Proper nutrition is critical to ensuring good concentration and behavioral control, and we found that many of these students were coming to school without having had breakfast and without money or food for lunch. A formal and comprehensive school lunch program has been established and donations are used to ensure that all of our students receive the nourishment they need to experience academic success.

Literacy and Remedial Reading Program – Many of our students present with fully diagnosed learning disabilities or learning deficits from having chronically missed school or having failed to receive early intervention and support. Reading is critically important to academic success, and many of our students are currently reading well below grade level or can be classified as “non readers.” The Foundation Schools has implemented a formal reading program using the Corrective Reading method, and donations help to purchase books and materials and provide additional training for teachers.

Mary Jane Kennelly Scholarship Fund – This fund was established in memory of The Foundation Schools co-founder who always held the students to the highest standards and believed in their abilities to succeed and progress on to higher education. Scholarships are awarded annually to assist students and graduates who need financial assistance in pursuing further educational goals. Options include college or university courses, vocational or recreational programs, trade schools and art and music enrichment programs.

Graphic Arts and Music Programs – Art and music are wonderful ways for students with emotional disabilities to express their feelings and progress toward healing. The Foundation Schools is committed to utilizing such creative programs, and is very proud to nurture our students’ talents. Funding received allows for the purchase of instruments and art supplies and for special programs, such as an artist-in-residence.

Athletics Program - The Foundation Schools middle and high school students have an opportunity to participate in Basketball, Softball and Volleyball Leagues which allow them to learn the fundamentals of these sports and to enjoy participation and competition in a therapeutic and safe environment. Funding is critical to ensure proper equipment and transportation to games is available to all students who would like to play.

Staff Development Fund – The Foundation Schools is committed to providing high-quality training and educational advancement for our staff members. The organization strives to equip staff with the most up-to-date knowledge and skills to succeed with educating and treating our challenging student population.

Please consider making a donation today to support our special program and initiatives.
